Services

Summit Physical and Sports Therapy offers a full range of rehabilitative treatment services for orthopedic conditions, post surgical recovery, and sports injuries. Neurological, balance and vestibular services are also provided. Our emphasis is on individualized care by licensed professional staff.

We offer a wide variety of therapy interventions and alternatives, including:

Hand Therapy

We provide individualized upper extremity treatments related to injury, surgery, disability and disease. These customized treatment plans are based on proven scientific research. By initiating therapy sessions promptly after an injury or surgery, patients can significantly reduce complications related to scar tissue, joint stiffness and nerve irritation. Our specialized staff includes a Certified Hand Therapist (CHT), a nationally recognized designation which means the therapist has at least five years and 4,000 hours of clinical practice in this specialty.

Patients suffering from an injury or disease that affects the hand, wrist, arm, elbow or shoulder can be assisted with this therapy. Following a thorough evaluation, a Certified Hand Therapist will develop an individualized treatment plan for each client including preventative, non-operative or conservative treatment, management of acute or chronic pain, desensitization following nerve injury or trauma, sensory re-education after nerve injury, design and implementation of home exercise program to increase motion, dexterity and/or strength, splint fabrication for prevention or correction of injury, training in the performance of daily life skills through adapted methods and equipment, and conditioning prior to returning to work.

Custom Fabricated Orthoses

We provide custom fabricated orthoses (splints) to meet the unique needs of each client in terms of both purpose and fit. These splints accommodate variations in anatomy and joint alignment and the thermoplastic material used is easier to keep clean than off-the-shelf alternatives. As treatments progress, the splints can continue to be adjusted and modified for proper fit and function.

Therapeutic Excercise

Many of the treatment programs at Summit Physical Therapy focus on therapeutic exercise. Therapeutic exercises refers to a wide range of physical activities that focus on restoring and maintaining strength, endurance, flexiblity, stability, and balance. The goal of therapeutic exercises is to return an injured patient to a fully functioning, pain-free state.

A physical therapist begins by conducting a thorough evaluation of an individual's physical capabilities through both a medical history and physical assessment. The physical therapist then uses his/her knowledge to shape a treatment care plan containing a slowly-progressing exercise program that is appropriate to each individual's needs. The physical therapist monitors progress, assists with some physical movements, and continuously modifies the plan as the client recovers.

The first objective of therapeutic exercise is to help the body reduce pain and inflammation. Once this is achieved, the exercise program focuses on regaining range of motion and rebuilding muscle strength and endurance.

Manual Therapy Treatments

Soft tissue massage, joint mobilization, manual stretching and myofascial release are used to increase mobility, minimize scar tissue and reduce pain. Manual therapy is a system of evaluating and treating musculoskeletal injuries. This approach evaluates joint mobility and stability, and muscle length and strength.

Manual therapy is the hands-on treatment of problems found during an assessment. The goal of treatment is to restore tissues to normal function.

Orthopedic Physical Therapy

Orthopedic Physical Therapy is a branch of Physical Therapy that deals mainly with bone, joint, ligament, and muscle injuries. This can include anything from a child with "growing pains", to someone who hurts their back at work, to the person who just had a total joint replacement surgery. Sometimes you can develop pain just from working at a computer for a long period of time.

We treat all ages of patients and all of our therapists have experience in orthopaedic injuries. Orthopaedic Physical Therapy includes every joint from head to toe

Therapeutic Modalities

Summit Physical Therapy utilizes a variety of therapeutic modalities, including electrical stimulation, neuromuscular re-education, iontophoresis, ultrasound, phonophoresis, infrared treatments, traction and hot and cold packs to enhance healing and reduce symptoms, depending on the stage of a patient’s injury or condition.

Therapeutic modalities may involve a simple technique like applying ice (cryotherapy) for an acute injury or more complex modalities like cold lasers to reduce pain and swelling. Therapeutic modalities, when appropriately applied to the patient, are a useful adjunct to therapeutic exercise in the rehabilitation of  injuries. The physical therapist makes decisions regarding what type of modality, as well as when and how to best apply the modality based on theoretical knowledge and clinical experience.

Custom Orthotics

Foot and ankle pain can seriously impact a patient’s quality of life. The qualified staff at Summit Physical & Sports Therapy includes specialists in custom orthotics. These are orthopedic devices that alter or modify a patient’s foot function to relieve pain and restore mobility. Custom orthotics are designed to treat, adjust and support various biomechanical foot disorders. Each orthotic is crafted to meet the specific needs of the patient.

Off-the-shelf orthotics are also available in our clinics as they are often a very simple and effective solution for some of our clients.
